Hello,

I am installing some new sockets on to a radial for a friend and I noticed that one of the existing sockets just had 2 core going to it, no earth.

Just wondering why someone would have put 2 core cable in rather than twin and earth?

Thanks..

It may be the black rubber cable just slightly newer than VIR, or maybe not, either way I recommend you talk the householder into a rewire at least of that leg or more if the rest of the circuit is the same, Forget about testing it if there is no earth, I would refuse to work on it if it is only 2 core and comprises of socket outlets feeding portable equipment, very very dangerous IMO.

DIY job maybe. Or is it singles and conduit is earth. check what leaves the board. Is its two core leaving board better rewiring the radial
I've checked all other sockets and all show continuity of cpc. It is just this one that has 2core. It is PVC sheath (old colours). Definitely T&E entering the CU
as an electrician, what do you think you should do?
A fair enough question. I feel a complete rewire is just a bit over the top seeing as though all other sockets are ok. This one socket has one 2 core cable entering it so it is either a spur or end of radial, so I will remove it and make safe.

It might be an idea to trim back some sheathing (assuming there is some) to see if in fact it's just the CPC's been clipped back so far it's invisible. But, probability suggests prize muppetry at work here.
