hi.
currently working on a extension, which has a bedroom and a adjecent wet room. my problem is that the the shower head and wet floor area is on your left as soon as you enter the room, and the customer wanted a switch outside the wet room to work 2 way with the bedroom lights. which means that it could be possible to be in the wet room having a shower and being able to operate the switch, if the door was open that is (not that the door would be open in most cases but it is possible) so i have persuaded the customer to have a pull switch as its in my oppinion the safer option. as regards to sockets, where do i stand?as far as im concerned its in a different room with a door seperating them, but there would be sockets within 3 metres of zone 1 of the wet room,if the door was open.maybe im being a bit picky but i pickled the boss's brain with it,and hes pretty clued up with the 17th regs and told me he'd get back to me with a solution by the morning!any other opinions?

if the wet room has a door then its a seperate room , you can put switches in a room containing a bath or shower as long as they are outside the zones and protected by an RCD so 600mm away , there is a distance from the outlet and i cant remember what it is sure some one will fill that in

thanks for my 1st reply!haha exactly the point i was bringing up with the boss.but its a grey area as far as he's concerned, surely the switch wouldnt comply?because with the door open its within zone 1. but even though the bedroom itself doesnt contain a bath or shower, the potential risk is there either way in my mind. the sockets i cant see a problem with, its in a different room, but i found nothing in the regs regarding this matter, should be clearer in my opinion, unless ive missed it??

if the wet room is enclosed, and has a door, as i'm sure all wet rooms do, then outside the door is not in the wetroom and so special location regs. do not apply. any fool can leave a door open to any bsth/shower room. they can also run an extension lead in there from the bedroom/landing/whatever. you can only comply with regs. you can't allow for cretins.

yes,but any extension leads would be used by the customer and therefore isnt my responsibility, the switch however,is my responsibility.but i understand where your coming from, just doesnt feel right wiring for a switch knowing full well that a shower is so close to it.thanks for your advice!

The wet room is defined by the walls of the room so Tel has covered this as OK, and even so, if the switch is over 1.2m from the shower head you could fit it inside the wet room, though it may not be suitable for the location, it would be outside the zones.
If the switch is outside the room then someone could reach out and switch the switch, but this would be very similar to someone crossing the room and switching the other switch. So long as it cant get sprayed should be fine.

Funny you should say that tel .[ElectriciansForums.net] Sockets and switches outside wet room[ElectriciansForums.net] Sockets and switches outside wet room extension lead into a bathroom with a blower heater on the end of it , and yes you can have plate switches in a bathroom as long as they are outside the zones and protected by an RCD , me being an old school spark doesnt seam right mind
