Hi all, i am currently at college and have been asked to do a project on solar power. I decided to create a small scale solar generator, for powering household appliances in the instance of a power cut. I have all of my major components (i know they are a bit mix and match) -

12v 10w solar panel

solar charge controller

17ah battery

500w inverter

I am shortly going to be wiring it all up but just wondering if im going to need any means of protection (i.e fuses etc) and or isolation, in my circuit and also a little unsure about how to add this to my circuit. I understand that the only time i will be using power is when the inverter switch is ON. Do you have any reccomendations or ideas?

thanks a lot.

You will need an AC and DC insolator for the inverter - these need to be dual pole.

You will also need a small consumer unit (garage consumer) for the AC side. This should have at a minimum MCB's (circuit breakers) and if the cables are covered at a depth of less than 50mm, RCD protection.

Is the inverter G83 compilant? Is the inverter designed to work from a battery?

Post the make and model of inverter and solar charge controller and i'm sure we'll be able to assit

if your inverter did fire up with the 10w panel , your going to find it tough running anything off of it , Id be thinking african and havin a few car head light bulbs a radio and a little cup water heater that way you can have pot noodle a hot water bottle and catch a few tunes , elese scrounge some better kit if it will fit in your satchel bag
