Had a similar problem last year - customer was on a remote hilltop with supply from a nearby pole-mount transformer. The inverter kept dropping out and when we measured the incoming AC he was getting anything up to 270V (no wonder his light bulbs were short-lived). He contacted the DNO and they were able to reduce the voltage to 240 by remote control. He kept an eye on the incoming and every now and then it would go up again, until eventually they came and replaced the transformer.
