I'm not actually sure it's an approved method of solder jointing... Where Lenny when you need him?

But there again the regs only state

526.3
Every connection shall be accessible for inspection, testing and maintenance, except for the following:
(iv) A joint made by welding, soldering, brazing or appropriate compression tool.

When we were taught how to solder, one of the excercises was soldering a cable tail into a lug
Tin the cable ,fill the pot,dip the cable tail into the pot and wipe the top smooth
Excellent method for large current carrying conductors

The suggestion you have made is not very different to the above
The connector block hole to be filled by the size of conductor
As long as the conductor and connector are tinned first ,the connector block is acting no different to a solder lug and I would be happy to make such a connection

The large heat shrink bit may be the weak part of the excersise
The connector block would likely have sharp sides that could press through the heat shrink
An enclosure would be better

Could you wrap the connector in something to safeguard the wrap?

Not the old "electricians tape" the tape DIYers believe we use to insulate every thing.
Underfloor connections, sockets, lights. One guy even used it to "bypass" the shower switch... Nice mess that was

Think the norm is heatshrink, but as Des 56 has pointed out don't think it would work well with a connector block.

Solder is a nono because the joints need to be accessable and when I was serving my the phrase was all joints must be "Electrically & Mechanically sound" and you may need to split the joints at a future date hence the conector block
