Spa bath with lights

I have a spa bath, with lights, pump and lights are straight plugged into mains with 2C+E for pump, there is an additional ground wire on metal body of pump. Question I have is this ground cable required as pump is installed on plastic feet and onto block wood with no access to the pump. There is an earth point I can get electrician to connect it to but as far as im aware all im doing is creating another potential path for current if pump already has mains earth

If possible, contact the Spa maker for advice.

If the connection exists, it is required by code that it be correctly wired. It is also definitely safety-related, so don't ignore it.

My guess is that the extra earth connection is there in case something goes wrong with the pump. You do not want the pump to apply any power to the water or to someone touching the body of the pump, whether due to a short in the pump or just leakage.
