Guys,

a customer has asked for 8No 50w spot lights in there bedroom. This is in a converted bungalow that now has the bedroom in the loft. The ceiling is of normal height but all im thinking about is the loft installation that is behind the ceiling and if i can fit the spot lights in. If i put fire rated spots in would you install 12v 50w transformers or just install GU10s. How far should the fittings be away from the loft installation, will also have to cut out some areas i think to get cables through. any ideas

cheers

I am interested in this question. A standard roof loft would be the same. if using mains voltage fire rated downlights IP65 for the bathroom, but then they enter into loft. would you have to tear some insulation back away from fitting or just install.

hmmmmm

I always make sure the insulation is well clear of halogen downlights.

Even if the manufacturer says its ok, i still wouldnt.

Either that or fit CFL downlights.

This issue deffo needs resolving - its a pain in the rectum. On new builds/extensions its a total nightmare, cos then other issues conflict with simply pulling back the insulation to allow for ventilation, which i always do - if for no other reason the lamps are prone to early failure if they get too hot.
Different parts of the Build.Regs demand adaquate ventilation of the lamps, but at the same time conservation of heat in the room below, and also prevention of moisture ingress if the room is a bathroom below a loft void.
Am waiting for an official viewpoint from a neighbouring area`s BC (promised soon) as my local BC are absolutely incapable of stating their position on this (or much else)
To date i`ve just fitted the better quality fire-rated cans from the likes of Click etc witth integral sealing against passage of air, sound and moisture. Best i can come up with when hoods/metal covers aren`t possible.

The situation aint much improved with ELVs, due to the extra issues of higher current & placement of transformers - tho you can get better lux output from these for the same Wattage as halogens. CFLs are much better if the size isn`t an issue, and obviously LEDs will solve most of these issues in time

Other`s thoughts?

I think LED's are the future but right now the dont really cut the mustard.

CFL's do a job if you are prepared to wait for them to warm up, they are just as good as halogens IMO, (13W ones) anyway.

Must admit not a fan of ELV because of transformers, just one more thing to go wrong.

I'm on Click at the mo too, find them ok, fire rated ones are tall enough to house a CFL no bother.

Hi

I really don't like these 50w spot lights, you may clear the insulation but what about the lovely part L insulator bringing the property up to current insulation regs, 280mm of insulation on top with out a care in the world.

Regards
