Got another little question for you, it spot lights this time! Here is the dilemma the house i am working on she wants four spots on a dimmer and on another circuit 4 wall lights on a dimmer. What rating do i need for the dimmer and how do you work it out? also what spots should i use? do you reckon normal cheap ones and remove the insulation from around them, i looked in the regs and it says up to 100w a area of 0.5m around the fitting. Can i use normal spots in the bathroom? and one last thing there is one spot in a quite height restricted area should i use a fireguard one for that?

Sorry for all the questions!

to my knowledge dimmers have a rating of about 250W

so you're looking at 5 x 50W lamps max, if they want more down the lamps to 20W ones

12v - 12v - 12v - 12v - at least you're not likely to kill anyone or set something on fire

choc box - choc box - choc box

these lamps will get VERY hot so make sure you do strip away insualtion if it is present

PS: CBW is offering some solid advice there

no offence, but if you don't know the info from you're first question then you probably wont know how to wire it up either

How about getting some kind of training/qualification/experience before embarking on destroying someones house?

You are asking the most basic of questions.............

got some qualifications thanks just wanted some advice that was all -----........................

does my head forums all i was asking for was a little advice not a ****ing lecture of some internet forum warrior i'm not going to destroy anyones house just wanted some clarification.

Anyway forget i even asked a question as i won't be coming back.

OOOH, Didnt mean to upset you like that, name calling was quite uncalled for.

I believe this is a forum for adult electricians, if you need help with a school project then just be upfront about it!

Google lighting circuits, that will give you plenty of info and diagrams on loop in etc.

have a look at some of his previous posts CBW, he doesnt seem like a bad guy, or out of his depth to be honest going by the quals he says he's got

though one about wiring a fishing trawler in tw+e was questionable.

i think if he'd stopped to think about his own question for 5 he'd have got there on his own

yes This guy is asking some very basic questions, but worryingly he is working in someones house,
What do you do!
Try and help him / get him understand he might be out of his depth or scare him off to make all sorts of mistakes??

I dunno!

I have PM the bloke, I guess he has gone off in a sulk, I dont think I was wrong but a little harsh I could have been nicer about it

He has however edited his original post where he asks how to actually wire them, so please dont think I am VERY harsh!

I knew how to wire a lighting circuit 24 years ago, when I did it in o level technology, so was obviously a little surprised to find a qualified electrician asking how to do a VERY basic lighting circuit in a customers house.

This does not excuse my rudeness and lack of understanding, as has been said recently this is a friendly forum and I should have offered my support to a collegue!

If it means anything to you atall, i don`t think you`ve said anything out of order, & i applaud you for stating it as it is...the guy`s clearly incompetent & shouldn`t be let loose with a voltstick in his own house - let alone someone elses.
Scary.
I haven`t been on the forum in an age precisely due to the likes of this
