Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake, not Galilieo, who died of a heart attack whilst under house arrest. Before burying Galileo they cut off 3 of his fingers and removed a tooth.
His middle finger is currently on display at the Museo Galileo in Florence.
I bet its sticking up in defiance against the human race, who through insecurity, mental instability or fear have a habitual habit of deriding or attacking concepts, people or entities they feel threatened by.
