My name is Stephen and Im from the Dovecot area of Liverpool. I am currently doing my A Levels in Law, Business, English and Citezenship but I have decided on taking a different career path. I want to be an electrician but I dont know how where to start. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on what I have to do, what colleges would be best, and any tests I have to do. I heard about apprenticeships but I dont know anywhere that does Electrics.

Thanks in advance.

I'll say this once & once only, because I fully expect to be flamed for it.

Keep on doing your A-levels, get your head down & do something at Uni. Every man and his dog seems to want to be an electrician at the minute, and a large percentage of them will do the qualifications required and won't be able to find a job.

Law is hard to get a job anywhere in the world with. Im currently in New Zealand right now and I want to move here and after discussing with a career advisor here, they is a need for trades man here and they are looking for electricians. Thats why im determined to take it up as a vocation.

there is always work for electricians - self employed can often struggled, due to current market a lot of firms had to lay off also,

but an experienced spark will always do ok - the hard part is getting upto that level.

exam route is changing shortly but at moment:
city guilds 2330 level 3, nvq 3, 2382 wiring, 2391 testing and if you can get a start as a mate while gaining the previous then you will be ready by the time they are completed.

i work self employed and am as busy now as ever, its always swings and roundabouts.

Got to say it's the same advice I'd offer

Go to uni and do an electrical degree if thats the industry you want to be in.

More and more of the jobs that are advertised want a degree qualified engineers

Even with the qualifications to get the jobs you'll need experience which is the hardest thing to get these days

yes I agree with all experienced sparkys, its hard to get work with no experience on site,Im working as a coffee machine engineer for a international company,I wanted to be a sparky,so I took one of the intense courses from trade skills ÂŁ2000 in total, got my part p,17th edition and testing & inspection, was planning on going self employed, helping out my mate & building it up from there.
Hes stuggling to get work at the momment and hes been at it 6 years.
So still stuck doing coffee machine repairs,im going to wait a while.its hard to give up a ÂŁ24k salary to ????

Electrical work is fairly unique
The subject can be studied to many levels, and the tradesperson can specialise in many areas and sectors

If a person finds that the subject is interesting, then half the battle is won to begin with
Training can be enjoyable, and your aquired knowlege of the subject will always be expanded, sometimes to very lofty levels, out of the reach of us mere mortals

Despite many moans about the industry, that I and others often spout,I dont think there is a trade that can compare, especially with the independent thinking required of the operator and the above average brain function of the workforce that is, unfortunately ,sometimes not reflected by the value placed on those electricians, mainly because there is the option of the pretend tradesman, always lurking in this industry

To anyone thinking of taking up a career as a spark,I would advize them to study at home the basics of the theory and use places such as this forum, to see if they think they have the aptitude for it,especially before payng out the high fees that are payed by some, who do not have a realistic grasp on the reality compared to the dream

All in all,it is an excellent trade for someone who has the interest and ability, but it is not the best paid for various reasons, some of which are dependant on the percieved low value that electricians sometimes have in the publics minds

Places like Australia and New Zealand may have better value placed on the trade,I wouldn't know.
Migrating there for an electrican, seems more available than most occupations,so perhaps they are different there

Think hard before paying up for courses etc and be sure of what you want

Mate, you've hit the nail right on the head. I've often asked if there is some sort of conspiracy going on nowadays to flood the construction industry, and hence drive down the wages? I only ask this because the Construction industry used to be (at one point) the only way that someone who didn't have a levels or a degree could earn a decent wage. Now every man and his east european neighbour wants to get in on the act. And just like the manufacturing Industry did, so the Construction industry will go the same way.

You may find that your UK training might not amount to much over there in NZ, in so far as you may still have to do courses there. If your academic enough to get A levels then go for an engineering degree, a UK engineering degree will open a lot of doors for you and is accepted worldwide, certainly a lot more doors than a NVQ or C&G qualifications

Work is hard at the mo as self employed ! im really struggling to justify it ! having said that i know a domestic installer who hasnt been in the game for long and is self employed living in a v-big detached 6 bed house and minted ! loads and loads of work all the time and charging ÂŁ200 a day plus and theres me time served been in the game for years (too many to remember) and not getting a thing really ! am i doing somthing wrong ? times changing since part p.
