I'm progressing really well through my level 3 cg2330 but I don't work in the trade yet. Got a solid job with john lewis but its not what I want to do. Do I wait till my exams are over, or leap now and try and get work with local contractors (although they keep asking for 2391, normally for experienced sparks). Is the work out there?, are one man sparks taking on help?, any experience/advice out there on taking the leap (do you go alone or work with?,any pitfalls. Advice really grateful .

If you've got a steady job keep it. Finish your exams and then get your 2391. This is just my own opinion. Most firms want 2391 due to the amount of sparks out there looking for work. If you can find a steady electrical job now, then go for it but nothing is certain in this industry just now.

I'm in exactly the same position. I have tried and tried to find some sort of work experience. Iv'e also thought about packing it all in but its something I am really passionate about. So I'm driven to carry on and hopefully find the experience and pick up the skills I need.

Getting your first start was always the hardest part, and that was before the influx of eastern europeans and domestic installers.
Steady jobs are few and far between at the moment so you might be better off hanging on to that and trying to do part time work around it. Get as many qualifications as you can then when the recession ends (I can't see it lasting forever) you'll be ready to go.

I totally agree with NovusSparkus and that's what I'm trying to do. It's a great time to train whilst in a recession and in a different job, but getting experience is never the easiest during the recession, so just keep with the training.

Read somewhere the Government is pledging 350,000 new Apprenticeships and this normally applies to people between the age of 16 - 18.

I bet there will be incentives for companies to take these Apprenticeships on and if it happens and the Electrical industry is penciled in for a fair few Apprentices that will make it very hard for those people like you trying to qualify off your own back.
