Afternoon all!!

Right..
What do you need to start up self employed and run your own business? I am sure of a people people around my area that have started up a business but with no actual qualifications? How is this? I assumed you needed level 2+3 nvq 3 am2 and 17th edition.. Or is it as long as you can prove you are competent?

Who do you envisage has the authority to decide whether anyone starts a business or not, or to place requirements on them as to competency or qualifications?

The justice system will stop you if they prove that you were not competent to carry out the work that put persons or livestock in danger. Part of proving you are competent is by having certificates.

So as i have 18 months experience (not a lot) level 2 + 3 and enrolled on my NVQ 3.. More than what the bloke from around here has.. Yet he has his own van with domestic installer on it how is this possible.. Just because he is competent in his work? I can do most work in a house along with testing and basic fault finding so who could stop me?

If you believe you are competent then there is no one to stop you going out and starting a business.
The problems will come if you are not competent.
The worker will not get repeat business, will be "unrecommended" by customers, will be asked back to resolve faults at their cost, the business will not make money, and will (hopefully) eventually get prosecuted for failing to comply with safety requirements and building regulations.
Unfortunately this can take some time and a lot of people suffer or may be hurt by the actions of this person.

The best way forward is to ask the schemes if the qualifications you currently have is enough to join up - if they say yes then off you go, if they say you need specific qualifications then you need to get them.

Having qualifications is one thing, having hands on experience is another..... as for competence - do you want to sleep at night?
