Just wondered what you thought to this and where the logic is?

25A 30ma RCD with C16A MCB feeding the small CU within the caravan. So far.. So good
In the caravan CU is another 30ma RCD rated at 40A with a 32A MCB for sockets and 6A MCB for lighting.

All caravans I had the chance to have a nose at where all set up exactly the same

The caravans wiring is just the same as a residential property. Ring main sockets can take 32amps and lighting can take 6amps therefore main rcd is 40amp as these 2 won't exceed this! The electrical hookup rcd/mcb sizes depends on the site and what ampage they want to give you! 16amp is ample for a small caravan.

16a feed to a board that has a 32a ring final..? And two 30ma RCDs inline..? Is it just me over thinking this..

I know it's madness really! It's just the caravan site giving rcd protection and the caravan also giving rcd protection, couldn't be safer really cos if one of them rcds becomes faulty your still covered!

You have a standard caravan hook up point that is RCD protected, all good for a non RCD protected caravan, maximum current from that supply is 16A, no problem.
For the caravan you have RCD protection (good required for TT systems) and standard breakers, no problem.
If the caravan was to be moved elsewhere and connected to a 40A supply with no RCD then it would be fine.

What you have here is the conjunction of two protection systems, however overall there is no real problem as it is safe.
You will never trip the 32A breaker in the caravan and the RCDs in series mean that either one could trip but as they are supplying the same installation there is no difference which one trips (except for the person trying to find out why the lights have gone off!)

I know there's no safety issues, all working fine, my initial thought was an awkward design, but as you say...the caravan is portable.. So installation conditions could change.. I think I'd just jumped to conclusions.

Going by the numerous threads on the forum concerning caravan park installations and some of the completely numbty ways that some have put forward on how they intended to distribute the pitch supplies along with totally inadequate earthing arrangements. It's just as well that you DO have 2 RCD's in series!! ...lol!!!

The upshot of all of this is, Caravan pitches are now covered under BS7671, and must be provided with a 30mA RCD, it is how it is, so if the van also has a 30mA, then there ain't much you can do. Just hope that its the one in the van that trips first, so you dont need to wander out into the dark wet night in your negligee's to reset it.

Cheers............Howard

Personally, I think we make too much of this "inconvenience" thing. There have been literally thousands of occasions throughout my life which have left me "inconvenienced" yet nobody gives a damn. If it's to do with having to reset 2, yes 2 RCD's however, then all hell breaks loose and heads will roll!!!

Too true, who defines inconvenience anyway, there are some people who would love the chance for a late night walk in their pyjamas (I assume).
We minimise (not remove) inconvenience, OK we have fitted an RCD / MCB instead of a rewireable fuse, sorted, inconvenience minimised"

I'd be absolutely fine wandering about re-setting a couple of RCDs (should be an rcbo now shouldn't it?) in the dark in me wellies and know that there's no safety issues (apart from the sodding holes in the hookup either side of the RCD and MCB).
