I got a call today from a pub who seem to have a strange little thing going on, but can't quite work out what it is.

They have a toaster in the kitchen and when turned on the electrical supply is disconnected. Fair enough so far, obviously something like an earth fault in the toaster we would think. ---- the toaster away and buy a new one, problem solved.

However, when the toaster is turned off, the electricity comes back on all by itself without someone having to reset a breaker or fuse. I havn't gone to see the setup yet, so I don't know if this is a fault or if thats supposed to happen. I havn't ever come across any devices or switchgear that temporarily cuts the supply in the event of a fault without the breakers/fuses popping.

Has anyone ever come up against such a device? Is this a fault or can anyone think of a device thats doing this?

Sounds like you have fault, I would guess it's a bad connection somewhere causing the circuit fall over when a load is switched on

Are there any other loads on the same circuit as the toaster

I am making an assumption that only one circuit is affected as you haven't said it is multiple circuits that are losing supply

The customer wasn't the most helpful over the phone so I don't have any more info than I already posted, so it could be single circuit, could be more. I'm going out to have a look after Christmas, so i'll let you know what I find.

First off i'll try the toaster in a different socket and try a different appliance in the socket to single out if its a socket fault. I guess you guys are right with the loose connection.

I did do a bit of google searching and found an automatic RCD. Its an RCD that automatically comes back on once a fault has been removed. I just don't see this type of thing being in a pub though, it doesn't make sense.

Anyway, Ill let you know the end result next week and post a picture of any strange auto devices that I find, if found.
