Strange voltage on earth wire

Agreed. Electrician came over today saying that its fine as the earth wire can be omitted but i did not agree with him. Charged me 40 for a callout for nothing
Can i check continuity of earth from a nearby socket outlet earth by plugging a extension lead in and poking the earth prongs of it. Its suppose to beep right as the cpc are made common in the bus bar.

I'd have expected a call-out on a Sunday to cost at least triple that just for attendance (and realistically more with you being close to London), but nonetheless it seems like a poor resolution.

Feeding to the switch is better than feeding to the pendant. For one thing it allows smart switches that need a neutral, and it also avoids having to fit masses of wire into a light fitting whilst holding it above your head.

From what you have posted so far I doubt they have done any thorough check. So yeah possibly £40 wasted.

I think its because most people adhere to the 2 plate method switching which they teach in colleges etc. Having permanent lives at the switch has more chances of borrowed neutrals + it gets hard to add or rewire as the wires are commonly behind solid walls unlike having it wires in the pendant more likely has drywall.

Another reason "to do it this way", is that it gives you a fighting chance of being able to make an acceptable connection to the abominations that pass as decorative lamp fittings sold by various retailers these days.

I agree, both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. I was just wondering why the OP "hated" one method over another. We all may have our preferred method.

Yeah it is quite dramatic hehe but when the lighting is on a ceiling rose which they use in UK, it has a lot of terminals for the normal halogen or led lights but when upgrading to "fashiony" lights those wires must be omitted, i see most electricians just connect the loops together with a wago connector.
