This is the first time I have ever seen straw in a stud wall. House was built in 1990.

I fitted a 35mm box and its wedged in. I managed to chop it out just the right size. I really would have like to have used some expanding foam to get a good fix but I didn't have any on me. I'm happy, it's secure
 
Make sure you know how thick the walls are. I once chopped a 35mm box into straw wall and stuck in in with gripfill. I used 2 25mm woodscrews to hold it in place while the gripfill set. You cold have hung a cap on the screw sticking out of the wall in the next room.

I've been guilty of this before as well. Your not the only one
