Stray voltage on lighting circuit.

Hi,

Can i pls have some advise.
I had a rewire done in my property and used halogen 50 w spots in the dining area 2 rings in the ceiling on separate switches.
I noticed on one of the rings the halagen lights had all blown i thought it was because of cheap bulbs so replaced them with LED bulbs.

When i put the LED light in to the fitment i noticed a small glow on the LED bulb and in turn once all 6 were installed i noticed they all were glowing??

I called back my electrician and he meterd the ring and found that there was a 23v feed to the ring even when the switch was off.
The switch is 3 way and there is 23v at the switch even when off??

He went away unable to solve the issue...
He has not been back to solve this and i guess he does not know what the issue is can anyone shed any light on why this may be like this..

The LED light have a permenant feed of 23v to the ring even when the switch is off all the neutrals are at the switch.
Im assuming this is why the halagen lights all blew as they were permenently on even though the lights did not come on it was not possible to see due to such a low voltage.

Im not an electrician but have some practical knowledge has anyone here any logical train of thought as to why this is occuring.

Hi Kelvin. Firstly, lighting circuits do not use rings. The spots will be daisy-chained together but the circuit will terminate at the last fitting. It's not uncommon to find induced voltage in cables. Does the cable feeding this one run alongside others on its way to the lights?

Also, I have known this to be caused by poor quality switches which allow a fractionally small amount of current to flow even when the switch is open.

Is this a two-way circuit or is there just one switch?

as above. this can be cured by fitting a snubber across L and N for each run.

Inductance is causing the problem needs a capacitor on both Sw live and neutral

Or is it a diode I've forgot

Had this issue the other week, followed someones advice on this forum and replaced the single pole switch with a double pole one, Problem sorted.

If you have a fan on the switch you can't dp it you have to fit a thingy lol

Hi & thanks for all the replies so far i may be getting somewhere....

1st The switches are from the click range of products are these ****e???
2nd The wiring is quite close together in the ceiling but the other daisey link is not doing the same as this one we checked it with the LED bulbs??
3rd This is 3 way switching with an intermediate if i remember with 2 x 2 way and 1 intermediate.

click range accessories are amongst the decent ones. 2 way and 3 way switching will probably be the cause. only effects LED and some cfl lamps. as i said earlier, a snubber or 2 will cure the problem.

a snubber is usually a combination of resistor and capacitor. fit across L and N usually at 1st light (trial and error as to where it will work best).
