String in SWA cables

Here's a question: What is the purpose of the length of string found in the middle of larger CSA SWA cables? Strain relief when pulling the cable, or something else?

If string was a conductor i'd be straight down the local £1 shop buying a massive ball of it and using it as singles haha

Could you run it in conduit? Wouldn't all those electric thingies leak out?

Hang on, tie little bells to the strings. Run it in conduit to a little tassled thing at the end.

You could...you just have to pull it through with some cable first...

With the old wax impregnated jute worming you wouldn't have a problem. Modern stuff it would act like a wick.
