Do you honestly think that these parasites who charge £2000+ for courses are going to tell you

"Oh by the way after we have charged you this amount for these courses you don't have a cat in hells chance of getting a job"

thus shooting themselves in the foot over the goose that lays the golden egg for them

I guess not, lol, but I guess that goes for the rest of the education/training industry as well. They always say there's a job at the end of it and there never is! Like everyone else, they are there to make money! In this case they could say, "if you are very determined you can make a little money mopping up the jobs nobody else wants", but I can't see them saying even that!

You're so right. I did my degree 16 years ago and I remember all the inspirational talks that they used to give us.....about how employers would be falling over themselves, trying to employ us, and how the world would be our oyster....LOL, what a load of bull that turned out to be. I guess nothing's changed. At least this course only lasted four weeks. I feel sorry for those kids now, stacking up three years of debt for a qualification that may very well get them nowhere. Ok, rant over :vanish:

my step brother did that, he has a degree in geography etc.

still works in a co op warehouse.

i started to do A levels and realised that to do the courses i wanted were not avalible and i would need to do others i didnt like then i could do it at uni.

the amusing thing is the uni course was using redundant tech then!!! lol.

i play around and tinker in my spare time instead

Yep done that, got the t-shirt. I've noticed how people are always saying there's a shortage of people who do this, and a shortage of people who do that, then it turns out there's really a shortage of people willing to pay them!

That's another rip off tax for guys working on sites. Just a money making exercise for someone. But you do need it, if you don't have a grading card.

Sorry for the late reply! I've applied for some ads for electrician's mates (and as you say, there are lots of such ads out there), but in addition to the CSCS card they want experience. I'm in the process of applying for the card, but you can't get experience if no one's willing to give you the opp. Yeah, not great.

Sometimes that just means experience of hard graft, and not sqeamish about 10 hour shifts.
Other times its tight fisted bar-stewards who really need a sparky, but don't want to pay the rates.

When sending your CV for mates work,most of the time it's best not to mention your degree.

People don't hire mates to teach/train them in anything, just grafters to help get jobs done on time.
In terms of the experience you seek, you might not get that as a mate, sometimes you get it by accident eg someone calls in sick and they give you a chance to do stuff that will be useful to you.

I was in the same boat as you, and just took anything going.
You're right about the quals nobody recognises them.

I have my feelings about fast track training establishments - I'll keep those to myself, rather than go off on a foul mouthed rant.

Thanks for the guidance. The last two months, having done those exams, have been a big reality check in terms of how difficult it is for a 46-year old to try starting a new career in the electrical trade. In that time, I've done one half-day job! I guess I just need to bide my time, wait for whatever chances crop up, and accept it's going to be a much slower process. They've forecast electrical storms today so, you never know, there might be a bit more work around tomorrow

Sadly the part p was a waste (shocked a college let you do it, lot over asked said it was a waste and they were doing the cources)
I don't know 4141 off hand and my tablet will be running out of power so I will read up that in the morning

If the only thing your lacking is experience, why not try bending the truth a little. Just a little mind...once you've been on a few jobs, then you can go back to being a good old honest joe again.

You wouldn't be the first agency sparkies mate to make up experience to get on a site, I had a few. As long as you show willing and put the graft in. If it's metal munching it's not rocket science.
