Hello all... Here is my problem!

I'll give you a little bit of background first, sorry if it gets waffly!

I came into the electrical industry while I was studying for my HNC in engineering (electrical pathway), as the company I was working for as an electronics engineer paid terrible and when I was given the name and number of a fella who could pay me twice as much in the inspection and testing game I jumped at the chance. Not having any experience really of electrical work, I learnt on the job doing new installation testing of various offices and hotels around the M25 area, and within a year it appeared that I knew a lot more about the job than my boss did, as I have a thirst for knowledge and I am constantly researching and checking places like this for more information. I worked for him for two years, and got my HNC completed, plus 2381 and 2391 also done.

I've now worked for another company for 4 years, carrying out PIR's for properties ranging from loads of housing association properties in Sussex, to the Museum of Wales in Cardiff, so I have some experience range. I've also done one off installations and remedial works along the way, as the client needed, but never installation work for months on end. Recently I also successfully got my Qualifying Supervisor status from the NIC, which was nice.

So the problem, I'm now about to be made redundant :(, and I have such a random set off incomplete qualifications I don't know which way to go.... Do I do the 2330 at college? Although I think that if I had to sit with a bunch of kids learning Ohm's law again I may just go mad... Do I try to get a JIB card with employers recommendations, just to try to get my QS position on something hard, although time is running out on that front.

I just don't know where to turn, I have a HNC in Engineering (electrical), 2381, 2382, 2391, QS, 6 years of experience.... What would you do?!?

Thanks in advance, and yes I know, it was waffly.... :)

Anybody?!

Please? :(

First things first what is it you want to do? if its testing etc then you will be fine with your quals and maybe try to find work with bureau veritas etc

If its installations etc for a company then im sure many would employ you with your qualifications and experience, if your installation skills need a touch up then im sure there are plenty of courses for example eal domestic installer course

Have you considered any other avenues? if you go on monster and type HNC and your area then there are lots of jobs around in many fields for example a local hospital is offering a job of biochemical technicians for anyone posessing a HNC and abilities in electrical and electronic engineering with training given etc repairing monitors, x ray machines etc

Have you considered maintenance engineering? your quals fit in nicely with the job and it can be a very rewarding career (mine in fact) repairing large machinery, installs, some mechanical works etc.

If you have a thirst for knowledge try and get into something that will test you for example being a maintenance engineer you will be learning about new kit every day and with automation and robotics becoming commonplace it can be very challenging, average pay is 30-40k

Hope that helps

Hi Montybaber,

Thanks for the excellent reply!!

There are loads of good ways forward that you have put down there, I was considering going on something like a domestic course, just because most of the stuff I have done is additions in SWA, and straight replacements, so I think that would be a good idea indeed if I can find the money. Maintenance is a field that I was looking to get into, but most of the time they ask for 2330/2360 as a minimum to get in, but I'm sure there are ways around that. I'm really looking for new challenges in my career, even considering getting into an electrical supervisor role, but still don't know whether I have the experience for this, although some of the supervisors I've come across leave a lot to be desired, and most of them I know much more about I&T than them and I have them asking me the answers to questions!!

I have a few interviews this week, for a variety of different jobs based in the electrical field, so I'll hopefully find something that will fit my mindset nicely. Even more hopefully though, if I do find it I hope I get it!! I've already turned down one job from last week, as it sounded as dodgy as anything, and hope I don't regret turning down a job when we're in the depths of recession... But there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, as I've had loads of interest for me, which makes a change!!

I'll have a look on Monster as well and stick in HNC, I just always have the fear that if I go for something that requires a HNC I won't have a clue how to do it, as since getting this qualification I've not really used the theories that I learnt in it.... But now's the time to try!

Thanks again, :)
