Hi Guys

Done a small job for a local heating engineer this morning just a simple FCU to the ring to supply the combi.

Potential problem is this:

The house suffered a powersurge last year and all credit on the meters was lost, the homeowner called out an electrician who also noticed the house had no earth, he fitted an earth rod and Wylex dual RCD consumer unit, full certification, good job.

Whilst on the job i noticed the house is crammed full of GU10 lamps which frequently blow, maybe down to poor quality, of course when they blow they trip the RCD, I had to tell the plumber and the homeowner that every time this happened the they would lose their heating as it is protected by the same RCD as the lights, they were rather concerned, Unfortunatly the thermostat is wireless and everytime the supply is lost the plumber will have to be called out to reprogramme it, not ideal.

The homeowner has asked me for a possible solution.
I intend to install a new supply circuit for the boiler that is NOT RCD protected, is this wise?

Also there is an issue with how i connect this, I cant put an unprotected circuit in this CCU unless i put the circuit neutral in the main switch and also the line which im not keen on

first thoughts were to move all the lights to the other RCD, this will solve the problem but if the RCD trips for another reason then obviously it , then i noticed bizzarly some of the kitchen lights are on the ring!

Then im thinking change one RCD to a Main Switch and the four circuits to RCBO's and then insert a standard MCB for the new circuit.

Any other suggestions

cheers

Can't you shift an Rcd across for one module, then use a piece of bus bar for an rcbo for the heating
The live is then picked up via the solid link and the neutral connection in the rcbo
The heating should be ok on its own
If the rcbo were to go, then there would have to be something worthwhile the heating being lost

Wireless stats are normally battery powered and shouldnt need resetting ,even when the RCD trips and the power fails ,the boiler should reset its self ,if over in llandudno you get as many power cuts as we do ,if what the plumber says is correct hell be moving in ,if the boiler needs resetting every time there is a power cut / RCD tripping i would have thought this is a fault
