Suggestions please

Just been to see a job where I would need to replace a FCU with a RCD FCU as its to supply a fan heater (1kw) in the bathroom. Easy I hear you say but...

the existing FCU is in the adjacent kitchen and its the first spur off the ring and there are 2 more sockets linked off the FCU (not through the FCU) making 3 points off the ring as spurs of spurs.

Thought about using the existing FCU to "control" the new RCD FCU, and the 2 sockets, but the existing sockets are for the fridge (0.5kw) and the washing machine (3kw) making the possible load about 4.5 - 5 kw (worse case) so the FCU would almost certainly blow fuses on a regular basis.

Extending the ring to the FCU isn't really on as it would mean disturbing their new tiling in the kitchen!

Any suggestions please!

You need a new circuit mate. Problem solved.

without visualizing the job, may i suggest leaving the existing ( bad practice ) FCU as is and come from somewhere else with your RCD FCU.

I know spurs off spurs are a no, no, hence the need to improve the situation but FCU to "radial" is OK.

Accomodation is a flat with solid floor and solid ceiling and no way to run a new circuit from the CU to the bathroom!

Thought of that but there really isn't anywhere to do it, hence wondering if anyone could think of any other way of doing it.

How much area does the ring cover - could you split the ring into 2 radials at the point where the extra sockets spur off?
Even that would be borderline.
IMO it should really be rectified properly, even if it means re-tiling.

Existing CU is a 4 way with all 4 ways being used.

Nice idea though.

I hate to say it, if they want a heater in there then they either need the ring extended if possible or a new circuit (even if it means retiling or a surface job)

Me thinks its another visit and with a view to removing tiles and extending the ring.

if you are careful you may be able to remove the tiles without breaking them. soak in water over night and scrape off adhesive next day. refit when wiring in.
