Could someone please explain the difference between BW and CW glands for SWA? I thought it was that BW was for internal and CW for external use, but Screwfix sell BW rated IP66?

Screwfix # 19254 BW 20 gland IP66
Screwfix # 16877 BW20S gland IP66

Both of which say “BW” on the packets.

I am wiring up some SWA 2.5mm outside. Which should I be using, or something else entirely?

Also, is there anywhere to look up what size cleats fit different sizes of cable as I haven’t done a lot of work with SWA.

BW dont comply to IP 66 you are right BW are internal CW are external the differance is the CW have seal round thelast nut BW dont i much prefer the cw's use then inside to as for cleat ask for them to suite when you buy the cable , i think its No 5 for 2.5mm ,but cable diameters can vary from make to make

CW glands are the only ones that i have seen rated at IP66. BW glands are only internal reckon it must be a mistake.

CW are definately external rated as they have the internal olive and the additional back nut with the rubber seal in it.

I only use CW glands indoor or out.

Thanks guys - it was my mistake the screwfix ones I mentioned are CW not BW but it's not the clear on their website, at least not to me.

I still don't get the difference between 20 and 20s - to do with the size of cable they can accommodate?

the 20 are standard size the 20 s are small size for cables like 1.5mm and 2.5mm 20's can go up to 3 core 6 mm swa bit tight though

And the CW's are a pain if you drop the olive out and put it back in the wrong way :D

I kept playing that game on my aprrentice. We had a line of lights to do and so had a little race. Of course, I swapped all his olives round before giving him his glands. He's now learnt to always observe the olive when he does his glands now.
