Hi guys,

Ive got to run an armored cable to a garage from a ground floor flat, the existing feed is pyro but its been vandalised and no good.

The pyro is currently clipped to a fence owened by the people next door. This is the only route down to the garage, short of digging up the concrete path for 30meters, which the land owner was not happy about.

The customer is happy for the new swa to be run in the same way, i cant see a problem aslong as next door are made aware and are happy for the cable to be run on their fence.

Can anyone else spot anything i may have overlooked?

Cheers,
Tim

i`v had this from lecturers myself....
the scenareo given to us was
`a cooker circuit does not meet disconnection times`....`how do you go about it`...
the answer:
use an RCD
hmm methinks....
so you wouldn`t pull in a seperate CPC and parrallel it up then?
better to just rely on the `magic` RCD then is it...lol....

Damian...what you`r saying is right....
theres umpteen amounts of drivvel being spouted by `them in the know`...lol
like this classic:
R1 R2 links at the dis-board....city & guilds want candidates to start dropping out all R1s from breakers and linking them to the circuit`s CPC....so whats wrong with inserting a temporary link wire in the earth bar and just stabbing it into the top of each breaker in turn together with R1?..
a damn site quicker if you ask me...
this would of course only be suitable for radials...

make sure the fence is stable, secure and properly fixed...
gain permission from the relevent parties...
clip the cable neat and make sure its visible....
just bat on with it kid...

Thats my plan, i cant see any major flaws in it, the fence is sturdy.

What do they want the power for Tim?

A socket and 3 lights, to be used on the odd occasion. Done the calcs and a 2.5mm is suitable but ill run a 4mm to allow for future additions.

Already done a board change and left a non rcd way for the garage and ill have an rcd spur in the garage. Theres no services in the garage so no bonding needed.

Cheers guys,
Tim

It does my head in mate it really does! So many chancers out there, some are even teaching others to be the same! It appals me the stuff I hear being taught today. I was talking to a lad on Friday who is at college and is being taught that it is absolutely fine to change his TT system into a TN-C-S by just whacking the main earth into the neutral! I'll be honest, even when I was learning I was amazed at the amount of stuff taught to me by one or two specific lecturers that was completely and utterly flawed! (Thank god I had one in particular that was an absolute guru to help even things out lol!).

If it wasn't for my hunger for knowledge and determination to understand things fully before actually doing them I'd be a crap electrician! Heaven help those that unfortunately don't have the same drive as I and are unlucky to have some twerp spouting nonsense at them. Not naming any names but there are plenty on here that also deal out advise whilst missing a clear and fundamental understanding of the basic electrical principles of the thing they are supposedly advising on!

What hope have the future of the trade got!?

well...i know of a few going round as electricians who will quite happily carry out a self TN-C-S....without any thought as to what PME actually is....
theres a lot of good stuff taught at colleges...but it tends to be librally sprinkled with make believe and never never land stuff....

I know what you mean. On a course I was on, the lecturer bloke said if you were fitting (say) a B&Q type halogen floodlight and there was no earth / cpc for it, it was fine to connect the earth terminal in the fitting to the neutral.

And, like you, we had another lecturer bloke who really knew what he was doing. He was an ex-colliery spark.
