SWA - too short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

been working on site today - came across someones bad calculations - there is 6mm swa in a ducting underground and it only comes out of the ducting at one end! i managed to dig down to the ducting and found the other end buried underground.
So what is the best way of connecting two pieces of swa in a ducting?? resin joints? or connectors in a connector box?

If the join has to be underground I'd say a proper resin filled joint is by far the best way, any type of enclosure if buried will cause problems sooner or later.

Instead of digging it up and jointing it on the ground you could have jointed it at the other end and pulled the slack down through the duct

Can't be longer than 75 mts then, either do the job properly or get the customer to sign every possible disclaimer so that it covers you until eternity.

Chances are you will reuse the shorter swa somewhere else anyway

A joint should be the last resort imo

Resin Joints are fine, I think the DNO's use them all the time, the country is covered in them, used to do two a day in a previous life!;-)

Hi - 6mm 3 core is about £2 a meter for 100m and there's ducting to use, so replacement gets my vote too .

Resin joint in ducting.. Hmm sounds like a dodgy situation. Ducting fills up with water, the joint would need to be 150% perfect or its going to fail in a year or three's time.

I don't mind burying resin SWA joints as they are drained, mostly. But this has the potential to be submerged.

I agree with the others, pull in new cable.

PS, how you going to access the joint site if the end is in the duct?

Properly installed they will be fine. There must be millions hidden underground without problems.

A well made resin joint, if it survives the first 12 months, left undisturbed should have a life span of 20 - 30 years.

Not sure of the age of the joints under the front gardens of my street. They joined the original pilc cables at some point and replaced with a short section of concentric into the meter box. Possibly late 70's early 80's ?

Mine and both my next door neighbours all failed within 18 months of each other though. Quite well coordinated failure I thought.

There have been lots of failed joints of that sort of age where houses are teed off from the main under the pavement.
