I have a switch that is with a rating voltage of AC 250V/ 1A – can I use this to turn a standard desk light that is plugged in to the mains??

Post a photo. Also need to take into account cable restraint etc
Just want to add a small push switch as I don't have much space...

Can you not use an inline mains switch? Don't like the sound of the wooden block idea.
Class II devices have no earth connected whereas class I do require one.

Thanks for your help will look into a switch on the cable - hoped I could get something smaller that could sit on the desk??

The connections on the back of that switch would need to be fully enclosed. Such an enclosure would probably have to be larger than a cable mounted switch, to fit eveeything in.

Something like this should be small enough?

In short, it's not sufficient to just compare the current and voltage rating of the switch with those of the lamp. Mains electrical accessories are designed and tested to remain safe under adverse conditions, which a small switch intended for within equipment might not. How would you know whether it would burst into flame if the lamp short-circuits and a 300A fault current flows for a moment until the plug fuse blows? What if your finger is on the button when there's a 2000V surge on the line due to a lightning strike? Will it jump over to that metal bush?

Horses for courses... use an approved inline appliance switch as above.

I did consider this but ended up going with this one. I wired it inline with the lives and works great.
