Hi, hpoe some one can shed a bit of light on this subject.
Am i able to install a switched fcu in a shower room.
The fcu is more than 0.6m away from shower tray and is feeding a towel rail.
It is also rcd protected.
Seems to be a bit of a grey area to me.
Many thanks.

Does the towel rail have its own controls in order to change to a non switched FCU?

only way is to install an unswitched FCU, with switching either outside the room or a pull cord switch.

yes it can but already wired in as customer inssted they would be switch from the heater.
oh well more time more money.

I agree with Telectrix. 701.512.3 complies with 13a outlets no less than 3m from zone 1 boundary on a 30a RCD so will have to be in another room. As you said though, more money lol

some say you can some say you cant.

If you are the one doing the design, installation and notification you need to decide for yourself as if it all goes txts up you'll be in court answering for your actions.

IMHO it should be outside the room.

quote: in zone 2. switchgear, accessories incorporating switches or socket outlets shall not be installed.......

my mistake. read OP wrongly. if it's outside zone 2 you're OK.

Just come across this thread. As long as the FCU is outside zones, ie. 600mm or more from the edge of a shower tray or bath then of course it is allowed.

IMO Common sence should take overe the regs IE Shouldnt be fitted due to 1 spray from shower 2 wet hands "forgetting" they are wet 3 CHILDREN

Of course common sense plays a part in any design. I have one in my shower room for a wall mounted fan heater. It is mounted outside zones plus about 2m high so no way children can get to it. I agree that we shouldn't just blindly follow regs though, that is why we train and study for years.

What about external influences? (steam moisture etc)

Is there anything in this section which would apply to a bathroom outside zone 2?

Potential of wet hands, condensation etc, sounds very similar to a kitchen IMO. Are we going to say that 230v plate accessories are not allowed in kitchens?
NICEIC pocket notes 2 has a table of items allowed in the different bathroom zones, outside the zones 230v plate accessories are allowed. Checked with the tech helpline and they have no problem with FSU's and even light switches installed outside of the zones. Obviously don't just go ahead and install without any thought, but in principal there would appear to be no problem.

The OP asked if was allowed. Bottom line, yes you are allowed an SFCU 600mm away from a bath or shower if you so choose. Not a grey area at all. Many electricians however, choose not to, and that is their professional decision.

I've seen many switched FCU's above 2.25m for bathroom heaters.. I still think this should only be aloud outside zone 2, although 2.25m is outside zones it's still a stupid place to put a switch to the side of a shower..
