Anyone know of such a thing?

I have 2 rolls of 2.5 that have got damp and the card has fallen off.

Was wondering if a clamp on thingy existed and where I could get one????

Cheers guys!

If you need the drums in tact to reel them off a cable drum holder it is possible to repair them.

This is hard to describe but I'll do my best..

you will need 1) the sides off a used cable drum.
2) two bits of wood (2' x 1' and about 10 inches long)
3) about 20 inches of cable.

Place the sides of the used drum each side of your cable (I presume the middle is still in tact?).
Then either side of the cable drum sides go the short lengths of wood.
Next feed the cable past one piece of wood through the centre of the cable drum around the other piece of wood back through the cable drum and tie/twist it together.
Then you hold one bit of wood steady while turning the other one to twist the cable that is passing through the drum and therefore tightening the sides of the drum on to the cable....there should be enough room left to feed your conduit through to allow you to put it onto your cable drum holder.

It's a bit bumpy pulling the cable off but it's better than scrapping it.

Of the top of my head.... How about cutting two squares/circles out of metal/wood. Drill a hole in the center poke a bit of threaded rod through the drum, place your wood or what ever on each end and tighten some nuts on. Easy solution really

think ive had a dodgy batch of late where one end keeps coming off

Me too that's weird isn't it!?

To save the reel you could try drying it out on it's side then painting the cardboard with some of that cheap pound shop epoxy 'gel'.

What I do when a reel goes bad is I have a few old reels from 'The Copper Cable Company' who use plywood sides instead of cardboard. Stick your bad reel on one cable jack and your wooden reel on another one opposite, hook the cable through the hole then just spin the good reel with your hand.... if you keep a good rhythm they reel on pretty straight, in fact I often do this if I have a big job coming up as the wooden reels are just so much easier to reel off, transport etc.

One thing I want to know is how come UKAS cable recently always smells like 1980s washing up liquid?

That can't be too difficult to make yourself out of some bits of scaffold tube or galv conduit and some wooden ends from an old roll, or fibreglass.
