Hi all,
Hoping someone can advise. Firstly, I am armed with a few certificates (2393 Part P, 23820-12 and 2392), however have very little in the way of experience.

I'm about to start a new build - my first - and have a qualified & experienced electrician who is going to wire the place up for me, but is happy for me to work alongside him so that I can get some experience. Eventually I'd like to wire my own builds up, but I know that's some ways off.

Anyway, my sparky is on holiday at the moment, and I need a little advice. I have got UKPN coming onsite next month to bring power on site into a temporary box for use during the build. I have a MPAN, which I've used to book an appointment with an energy supplier for them to come and fit the meter.

My question for you (I asked the lady at the energy supplier, who seemed somewhat flummoxed by the question!) is, when does the electrician install the consumer unit & sockets into the temporary supply? Would it have to be on the same day that the energy supplier's team fits the meter, or can it be afterwards? The reason I'm not sure is that my understanding is that the team who install the meter would fit the service fuse and seal the supply hub. In my mind, this would mean that if the sparky came along afterwards, he's not going to be able to feed the meter tails into the consumer unit without breaking the seal and removing the supply fuse (which is not the way to start a new build!).

Can anyone please advise on the correct and appropriate order of events?

Many thanks in advance,

Ken...

A new supply will usually include an isolator for you, so you can switch it off and not break any seals.

I haven't had anything to do with new supplies for about 5 years, but when i did, they would only shove a fuse in when there was a CU in place to connect up to. So i always fitted the CU and wired a twin socket into it, before they turned up to do there stuff.

Cheers…………..Howard

Good advise from Howard,I would also add, don't forget to provide your own earthing system,(that's presuming it will be Tnc-s)

Many thanks for the advice guys.

I've subsequently been informed by my energy supplier (e.on) that the guys that they use to fit the meter (EDF) will insist that the CU must be fitted and certified, with meter tails in place, before they will fit the meter. It also seems (picked up from forums) that EDF do not fit an isolator as a matter of policy (?!), but I guess no harm in us fitting one ourselves.

In terms of earthing, in the "what you need to do" brochure that UKPN gave me, it states that temporary builders supplies are usually fitted without earthing...so I'm guessing this means a rod for the temporary supply.

fit RCD to the temp supply. you must earth it with a rod, and fit RCD
