Reading another thread got me thinking about the terminology we use such as making off, glanding off etc. but how many of the younger sparks know what "belling out" means?

If you don't know what belling out is within the first month of training you're on a slippery slope to no where.

What was an even bigger pain was if the bit wanted replacing ... you needed years of practice to get that hammered stub out of the handle, by the time i got the knack the bloody battery drill came out

It's a term used to tidy up the lay of a knot,, as well as sorting out things in your trousers..

So it will have come from all the Ex Navy lads who became sparkies after W.W.2.
Most of the older guys that were there when I started were ex Navy.

And how many lads nowadays will be rushing off to "Maccy D's" (I believe that's the term they use) to get Tea when they are asked to go and sort a brew out.
