Would I come across "B" type RCD's? Where are they used?

In a domestic sense, you may occasionally find a B type RCD protecting older PV inverters.

I believe all newer inverters now have their own electronic means of fault protection built within the unit itself, irradicating the need for the use of a B type DC current RCD.

You're likely to never come across one in your line of work.

Can i ask you (Test-Meter) what you think about the Earth Resistance test function question i had in post number 6.

Sure - Guidance Note 3 recognises two methods of testing an earth rod.

You can either conduct a 3-wire earth resistivity test whereby you would fix a couple of test leads onto metal spikes (similar to tent pegs) which are fixed into the ground at given distances from the earth rod (this has the third test wire attached to it) in order to calculate the Ra value, or you could simply carry out a loop impedance test on the earth rod itself.

The impedance test (in my experience) is what most electricians would tend to carry out, however it might not always be practicable. For example, if you are wanting to wanting to install a temporary rod for a generator supply, the 3 wire Ra test would be more suitable - again I don't think this would be applicable to you.

If for any reason it is applicable, not all MFT's capable of carrying out an Ra test come supplied with the earth spike kit in order to conduct the test, so be careful in your choice....But don't hesistate to enquire if you need to.
