i am recently qualified but lack test and inspection experience,,could someone please explain to me the symbols on the test meters, which symbol for each test etc.cheers

I think you need to spend some practical time shadowing another experienced sparks first, the shiny new toys can wait until then.

Proof testing and electrical fault finding/testing from individual circuits through to a complete installation is an acquired art, that is only mastered through working with experienced tradesmen.

It also has the ability to set real electricians apart from the wanna be electricians...

Lima - wasn't meaning to give you a hard time, and I do realise that what I wrote is easier to say than actually get! We all started somewhere. If you're near the south west then let me know, I'll take you out for a few days when I've next got a load of testing on.

hi sorry,,i meant the dials on the actual meter,,thanks

Each instrument often has different markings and work slightly differently.

You really need to get hands on experience and work with someone who knows what they are doing. Its an unfortunate sign of our times that people are incredibly selfish with their knowledge, possibly because the competitive nature of the trade.

It might be a start to google some of the manufacturer's products and have a look at the specifications to get an idea.

Get yourself to the website of the manufacturer of the test equipment you're using. You can often download the instructions from there. These should have a guide as to the function of the various switches and a basic indication of how to use them.

think u might be right,,,the guy i worked with last just didnt want to know or teach...thanks bud

As ackbarthestar said, it is a real shame when that happens as it doesn't help anyone. Generally the case with "experienced professionals" who in reality don't know what they are doing and are trying to hide the fact!
(or he could have been very busy and didn't have the time....)

If you just want to know that the dials do then the manual is a good place to start. For example here for a fluke 1652.

If you want some basic video help on testing then try youtube. I haven't watched it properly so can't vouch for the accuracy but I just came accross this mini series which does some testing using the fluke.

In the time you were training did you do any practical testing?

To say you are qualified beggars belief if you can’t understand a basic test set. Have you read the manual?

I’m sorry but you got me annoyed when you say you are “qualified”.

Which course are you recently qualified in limagraar, the syllabus may have had some testing and inspection in it that we can refresh you on?
