Might be a silly question, but, if I test a contact on the 12v output side of a 240v to 12v transformer with a 240v electrical screwdriver, should it light up? It does on both terminals

no it should not. But those screwdrives are not reliable at all and should not be used to test for power

They normally need 90V plus to light up.

Could it be induced field from the coil?

I was introduced to Neon drivers as "plumbers drivers" very wary of them specialy when I know a guy who got a right good shock when his Neon broke
