Testing a flex

My (newish) oven switches off intermittently. When it is off and I test the flex with a voltage detector pen, there does not appear to be any power there. When I flick the switch on the wall the oven comes back on. I have changed the switch, but the same thing happens. Should I replace the flex?

this sounds like it should be in DIY section.
A voltage pen isnt really a proper form of testing.

But to answer the question...am i reading this wrong?? When the switch is off there is no apparent voltage, when you turn the switch on the oven works??

Doubt it.

Get an electrician to have a look, if it turns out to be a problem with the oven send it back!...

i'm a tad confused! the way I read this is- when the oven is on and working (so switch in on position) it intermittently goes off. At this point you are checking the cable with your volt pen and it is indicating nothing. So you then flick the switch (now in off position..?!) and the oven comes back on.

Correct until the last sentence. I flick the switch off and then on and the oven works. I have changed the switch and the plug.

so the oven is on a 13a plug top into a single/double socket behind cooker? when it goes off, and you flick the switch on+off, does it come back on every time, or only sometimes?

It is plugged into a socket (which is in a cupboard next to the oven) on the cooker circuit along with the hob. The oven is 15 months old and replaced one which was wired up the same way with no problems.

Is it the thermostat? The oven will go on and off once up to temperature, and keep doing this to maintain the set temp! If so then this is normal.
