All sockets where checked and they looked fine but then ran out of time so back in tues for further investigation. Did try another rcbo an still the same.

I would dead test the cct and test every point with the figure of 8 method (again) IMO something has been connected up incorrectly. I don't use a 1700 series Megger but surely the tester is pointing to a connection issue and plugging something in the RCD is seeing the fault!

Are you plugging tester into same socket as appliance when it trips? could be socket is down (faulty socket) test between l-n n-e e-l on the socket see if it belles out.
another thing ive been to job where rcd is tripping and IR test at board is showing me fault between live and cpc. when ive taken off the first socket on the ring and retested the fault has cleared. this was down to the cables being squashed but not enough to break the insulation but thinning the insulation enough for it to freakishly show a fault between the line conductor and the earthed metal backbox!

Just a couple of ideas!

Sounds like........L is in N,..... N is in E........at the socket you are testing from or a full reversed polarity on the circuit and a neutral to earth fault.
