That's true and of course if you were in a classroom situation then it's not what you do. But by will get a decent indication if there is a problem or not. If you measure at the source and get one voltage and there is a big difference at the load end, then you can be pretty sure you have a problem
 
When you calculate the volt drop you use the design current of the circuit, so surely you'd have to have your circuit pulling its full design current to measure the volt drop properly
