Hi guys and gals,

Just paid for the new City and Guilds 2396 Design and Verification Course which I'm starting in 2 months time. This new one is a level 4 compared to the old which is level 3! So how come?!?!? I spoke to the lecturer and its all basically the same: Project and 3 hours exam.

Has anyone here had any experience with the new course, or will I be one of the first? Would love to get some info to prepare myself.

But eyyyy.... Just a run the park :dizzy2:

I plan to enrol on a 2396 course before the end of the year. Also I,m still awaiting the results from my 2391-10, fingers crossed. Not sure which Training centre to go to. Would be interested in any recomendations available from forumites, middle of the country would suit me best.
I may need all the help I can get.

Does success in the 2396 written exam earn grades of "Pass", "Credit" or "Distinction" as did (grandfather) 2400, or is it simply PASS or FAIL ?
I cant find this info anywhere in C&G course documents. I sat the old 2400 in 1994 and only had enough time to properly answer 9 of the 10 questions. I never sat the 2391-20, but recently sat the new 2396; I found it easier than the 2400, and had about 15mins to check my answers. My view is that the new 2396 is more "logical" than the "opinionated" 2400.
The Design Project for the 2396, however, is more demanding.

the 2391-20 has grading. In what way is the project for 2396 more demanding?
Out of interest, why did you do the 2400, and then the 2396?
i bet your trying to see how many qualifications you can fit on the back of your JIB card ;-)

I found the exam for the 2391-20 quite easy, but it took me a while to get into the project. I found that i worked best at night, much to the annoyance of my ex!

Im still waiting for my project to be marked.

never mind the exam being a beast, the assignment was a monster I took three weeks leave to do it (40 hours recommended) and I worked 8 to 10 hours a day seven days a week for the whole three weeks. I used guidance notes 1 and three, the wiring regs, Scaddans book on design and verification and the IEE book Electrical installation design guide.

I was well chuffed when my assignment passed first time, but it stole three whole weeks of my life, time with my family and a years earned leave. Be told. Be afraid! Be very afraid!:smug:

Having done the 2391-20 and the new 2396, I can tell you the exam is a beast in comparisment and very hard, given the time scale. Questions in the 2391-20 would ask for brief discription whereas the 2396 asked for detailed answers. The electrical calculations are on par with HNC level, so this course would only suit those with above average knowledge, as the course itself doesn't cover enough. Only 2 out of the 10 at my training centre passed, me being one of them ;)
Hi,

I came across this post but just noticed the date on it.

I am looking at doing this course but my maths are poor. I have 2391 and all the other bits n bobs and am an NICEIC approved contractor.

Basically what im asking is does anyone know where I can get help with these kind of calculations whether it be online or book.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I took this Exam last night 6:30 to 9:30.

I cocked up the IB Design which basically sets up the rest of the calculation because i took a new calculator with me and with it being all fancy I never put:

Power / 400 x squareroot3 x pf x eff% in brackets

should of been (using the calculator)

Power / (400 x 1.732 x 1 x 1)

It gave me 51 amps instead of 17amps (GUTTED!!!) so a heads up to anyone doing it or thinking about it - KNOW YOUR CALCULATOR - and don't be a clown like me:6:

Hopefully they will see that I made a simple mistake, but all the calculations was methodically correct lol.

However the 3 hours is no way near enough! And making you take a test at 6:30pm when you have been driving, working or revising all day is not a great time to take a 3 hour test!

I answered all the questions but there was one about bonding mesh networks (which I left to last). I had no clue to be honest what it really was except the small clue in the question about computing, which I just gave a simple answer regarding high integrity protective earthing may be necessary (it also asks for a drawing too).

I did find the information finally on page 108 and 109 of the regs but with 30 seconds left i just chalked it down to experience.

One of the guys who took the course with me 3 weeks before was a real experienced (past his 2391 years back) electricain, he currently supervises 200 electricians, he has probably forgot more than I know and he did not complete 3 questions worth around 50 points.

So anyone looking to take this course, do not think you can pass a 2394 and 2395 and jump straight into the 2396!

I passed both the city and guilds 2394/2395, even though they are closed book exams they are far more easier than the 2396 which you can take 4 books (on site guide, BS7671, GN1, GN3) in with you.

The time just flies by, they say its 10 questions lol - yeah with a) b) c) d) e) f) and sometimes g) sub levels!

What I will say, is that the knowledge you learn is worth every penny. even if I need a resit in June I have a much better understanding of the BS7671 and the electrical industry.

Thanks for reading
Greg

I couldn't find the mesh grid either until after the exam. I was kicked myself as that would of been a nice 14 marks. But where I also left it to the end - I only had a few minutes spare. Was intense - you started the project ?
