Hi, I am hoping to get some advise about qualifications, basicly I work occasionaly for a company that contracts to repair and maintain industrial equipment, mainly in the food production industry.

The job is mainly mechanical but some time we are held up waiting for an electrician to come along to disconnect or reconnect motor or install switch gear ect.

After a long delay on the job last weekend, while talking to my boss about it, he suggested that it would be a good idea to have some one on our team that could do that sort of work, so we didn't have to hang around waiting for the overworked on site electricians.

So in order to be qualified/competant to remove and refit motors, connect into switches, and possible run cables from an exsisting DB to a machine, what qualifications would be required?

If it would be nessesary to obtain C&G 2330 for instance, it would not be economicaly viable for my boss to fund that but if a lesser qualification was possible it may well mean a full time job for me:)

If it helps I have over the years had experiance in rewiring domestic and comercial instalations, instaling flame proof lighting systems, 3ph instalations in a aircraft maintainance hanger, (always inspected by a qualified person afterwards) and electromechanical repair on comercial and domestic appliances.

If your caring out any sort of electrical work, especially adding new circuits. You should be fully qualified, experienced and be able to assess the general characteristics of the existing installation, design your new installation or work out if the existing was done correctly in the first place, inspect, test and certificate your own work.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, by fully qualified do you mean I would need to obtain C&G 2330, in order to disconnect and re connect a motor? Or is there a C&G qualification or an NVQ or such like I could obtain more quickly in order to enable me to do limited electrical work, such as mentioned?

Thanks

There are many different ways to get qualified these days i ve lost track, I have a few apprentices and some of them are doing different courses, as far as i am aware to be seen as qualified you need to pass the theory side normally a city + guilds, then you need an NVQ 3 which is the pratical side, then if you are working in the relms of BS7671 then you need to do the 17th edition and you aslo need to prove competance in inspection and testing which means the 2391.
