You know what, Last year on my employers advice they suggest if I want to get into the electrical employment sector i really need to consider going to college full time to get the skills and qualifications necessary to achieve my career goals.I had thought about it for years but financial constraints always held me back....then after one really **** day at work I snapped and packed my job in.
That was a year ago now and I have had no money to live on whatsoever since i started college( the system expects you to live off your partner), Its been tough financially but we got thru it and i left college with NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds 2330, I also got my ECS JiB Card as the college were always banging on about never gettin work if you cant get on site etc.....

Since last september I have been writing to employers, one man bands etc....both locally and nationally looking for work both full time, part time, temp or even casual.....I have even offered my services for free so that I can gain that valuble work experience and pointed employers in the direction of the goverments train to gain initiative that means they pay ÂŁ5 per hour towards your wages and stressed that if i am taken on even on minimum wage the employer only has to pay me 80 pence per hour.

But still nothing just letters of thanks but no thanks we will keep you on file, I cannot stress how important it is as many of you know that you need an employer to do you NVQ Level 3 and i just cant find any employer willing to give me a chance.

I gave up a secure full time job to better myself for a brighter future for my family and I yet after almost one year ive ruined my credit rating, almost had my home repossessed and suprised the wife aint left me.

What the college didnt tell me when I signed up is that there are hundreds if not thousands of unqualified electricians and mates out their who have many years work experience, Employers want guys with experience, Its all about WHAT CAN YOU DO?this is the question agencies will ask you.

Hows about the goverment giving us a loan or tax system so we can repay our course fees later down the line, Surely we are worth as well as Uni Grads.....There is no funding for people like me, Ive searched everywhere and cannot continue to keep emptying my wifes bank account to fund my training.

Enoughs enough. My old job was bad but at least it paid the bills and to be quite honest I am frankly quite shocked at the rates of pay electrician mates recieve, My last job paid ÂŁ9 per hour...what have I done?

Thanks Jim.

Basically the 2330 is really for apprentice training lads. I assume anybody older than this say 26 above would take the 2382, 2391, and register with a scheme route.

Cheers

The 2330 Level 2 is run alongside the NVQ Level 2, On successful completion the following year you go on to do 2330 Level 3 which can be done without an employer as its all GOLA online multiple question based but to do your NVQ 3 alongside that you need an employer for the work experience and to build portfolio evidence as the Level 3 course is just one day per week at college part time whereas the level 2 was full time college and all evidence was workshop based which is acceptable for NVQ level 2 but not 3.

The college dont tell you this when you sign up, If they did they would lose money as most guys in my position would think twice about going back to full time study after 20 years if 12 month down the line they were gonna be unemployed signing on, college is a business and they will say just like a politician, tell you what you want to hear then kick you in the teeth later down the line, Our tutors need us to pay their wages, If we didnt go to college theyd be out of a job looking for sparky jobs just like we are and god help em if they ever had to go back on the tools.

Not necessarily I am 35yo, My local college was advertising/targeting this course to mature students with little or no experience in the field looking for a change of career.

Yes i was in this situation, done 2336 think was called way back...left the trade for longtime..because in situation like these guys as school leaver (this being the old recession 80/90's), worked on and off for people just for $ but got experience, but came back recent serious (past the age of 26)...done 2382 and going for 2391.....

to get back the lost experience I just started working for myself doing little jobs on own, stuff i knew i could do...built my confidence in the real world (dealing with clients, pricing, types of work and sites etc etc and it just grew...Guess main thing is you dont take stuff on you not confident with....this was at least some pennies will be coming in until a contact base develops and you get the break you need...i got enough coming in now to cover a fair life...

ok domestic to start with even though you have qualifications for all feilds...but a ring and lighting circuit as boring as it may be will bring confidence and money

But in your 30's would you not have been better taking the route 2382, 2391, and register with a scheme route or a train to trade route? Therefore you would have been ready for work. Its just a thought. If not would an ONC not been better which woulld have left a clear route to consider further study.

Anyway all the best:)

Living in sussex and not been great but is picking up, and i really feel for you guys.....i know it sounds a bit sorta odd job style but have you thought about just going alone!.....get some freeebie cards made from online some leaflets and just go through all local doors and buisnesses...maybe little local add....you will be very supprised....state your local buisness and maybe people will support that........letting agencies, and estate agents always good one to drop your cards and leaflets too......and maybe with bit of leg work some calls might start trickling in.....also a little web link to simple web page.....send it out again t o local orrr outter area buisneses.....as a one man show you will be able to take the smaller jobs companies dont and the alot around if you want them........

All the best

I'd back this advice all day long it cost me just over ÂŁ1500 of my own money including Part P assesment along with a few grants from Local Council and Business Link totalling about ÂŁ3500 which got me up and runnning and work is trickling in now I've been on my own for 6 weeks

Yeah totally i agree the 2382 and 2391 scheme be good route (IF there is a reasonable amount of knowledge and skills there already).......i was kinda fooled into thinking i should get the Part P when i 1st came back...very soon after to realise it was kinda a waste...still done it..and 2382... just need to get 2391 now...
