Hi. I am considering working towards becoming a qualified electrician. I plan to take the 17th edition course, a place near me do a 3 day course for £540. And then look for somewhere that will take me on as a trainee. What advice do people have? is the 17th edition a good place to start? I have GCSEs, 3 A levels, currently doing a university course that I dont enjoy and will probably drop out of. I have no electrical qualifications yet. Please share your thoughts!

Thanks,

Depends which college you go to. Mine wanted evidence of a 'full' course before enrolling on the 17th edition.
well then they were making up their own rules....if you had to have a qual such as the
C&G 2330 BEFORE you do the 17th edition...then how do the 5 week wonders go about it...as the minimum requirement for acceptance onto one of the scahmes is to hold the 17th edition.....and a swag bag of course...

Every college seems to make up their own 'rules'.
Yes there are colleges which will bundle together a load of short courses which offer the bare minimum to be able to register on a part P scheme, and there are some who insist that to do the 'cherry on the top' courses you must show evidence of a solid base of knowledge. That way a certain qualification can be used as a bench mark of how much training someone has done.
You often see job adverts stipulating 'must have 2391' - if it's from the college I went to that implies you also have a technical certificate and an up to date regs course otherwise they wouldn't have let you enrol, but if it's from some training centre you might just have 2391 and nothing else.

It depends which college you go to.
