My Sister has had an electrician in to put up a security light for the garden. She's just told me the wiring comes into the house and then directly wired into the back of one of the sockets! Sounds dodgy to me.

Very dodgy take it they just spured into the back of the socket (RING CIRCUIT) theres no protection or isolation for the light a new circuit should be ran with its own protection or could come off a switched fused spur best thing for you to do would be to disconnect the light. Did u get any certification with this job

That's what I thought. I dont think she has any control over this light whatsoever. Not sure what certificates/guarantees she got with the job(if any!). Only found out about it tonight. Some "electrician" from yell.com. Would've thought this guy could get into a bit of trouble with regulations and laws the way they are today?!

You should not disconnect the light, you should ring the 'electrician' and ask him to return to the job to explain what he's done and how it complies. If you can't get him to return, mention Trading Standards.

We should NEVER advise someone we've never met or who's skills we have no idea of to start tampering with an electrical installation, besides, once you do that, you'll have no redress at all!

I find this rather interesting - surely the "installer" would do it properly, by installing a FCU as well, which would take longer and then he'd make more money!

Are you sure your sister wasn't trying to get a job done too cheaply?

As above I'd want to see the certificate for the install and if there isn't one, call up the sparky, request one or he'll get reported to trading standards!

Yes get him back round and tell him you need a fsu as per reg 537.5.1.1 of the 17th ed:- A functional switching device shall be provided for each part of a circuit which may require to be controlled independently of other parts of the installation. This is just one of a handful of regs he needs to comply with. Tell us how it goes and please feel free to ask questions if you have any more problems with this guy.

Guy can't have been a spark. I mean there is doing something badly and then there's this. No means of local isolation? Did the guy provide a fire extinguisher for you?

No local isolation is an inconvenience, I'd be more concerned with the lack of adequate overcurrent protection for that (probably) 1.5mm cable hacked into the 32A ring!

As littlespark says there's no ways you're going to find spike lights that can accomodate SWA cables directly into them.
