Hi Guys, Just a quick question regarding the earth clamp on a Domestic TNS system. The property we are rewiring at the moment has a TNS supply and the earthing clamp on the paper lead supply cable has rotted and is unusable. I spoke to DNO (Northern power grid) and asked if they could renew it for us. The call centre said no do it yourself or pay £160+ to have it converted to PME. I thought that if their equipment was faulty they were responsible for it and had to fix it. I know some sparks just stick a pipe bonding clamp round the cable and use that? I don't fancy doing anything with the cable because it looks knackered. Is a bonding clamp acceptable as long as Ze is correct?

If I wanted to go ahead a pay for PME ,Northern Power Grid quoted up to 10 weeks for works to be carried out.God knows what time they will quote for a free repair of there equipment . We will see tomorrow when I phone them again.
look, you seem a really nice person...but let me just give you a few pointers here will you:

first of all....its not a `free repair` they will be carrying out...its a neccesary repair to their equipment...which they have a duty of care to maintain

secondly...dont go back to them with the idea that its your responsibility...you have made them aware of the situation...thats it...now its for them to see to it...and dont be told otherwise....you have to represent now for the customer...and believe you me when you have saved them a whole load of cash you will be popular...

just out of interest...whats the cutout here?...

cast iron by any chance?...fused neutral by any chance?

Nice to see you back Glenn. ;)

No nothing as exotic as that, just the standard black plastic /Bakelite unit with 1361 Type 2 fuse.(BS88-3)
oK...

well as eng & I have said....

dont you be pushed about by these turnips...you get onto the area engineer...and if they say there isn`t one...then you know thats a lie as well...

dont get into long drawn out conversations with telegirl...as she will know precisely jackshyte about what your on about....

stand your ground, be firm and you will get a result...

Test the sheath. If OK fit a constant force spring and braid.

Saves all the earache.
Yes it is the DNO’s responsibility to maintain their equipment, but there’s times when you just give up with them. If you fit a constant force spring follow the instructions about doubling the braid back under the spring. Protect it afterwards with self amalgamating tape.
Use a bit of care and there’s no problem with PILC so long as they haven’t been stressed. I’ve reused PILC from the 1930’s. Rerouted in to new switchgear, they gave IR readings I would expect from a modern cable of equivalent size. You’re not going to be moving the cable.

If you decide to phone the DNO, PM your home address. I’ll send you a pack of anti depressants. You’ll need them!
