Hi,
Could I ask for some pointers and recommendations for a tone generator/tracing tool please?

Having browsed various sites including Amazon, CEF and RS the range of options is vast from £20 up to many hundreds. Are the cheap ones junk? What do the more expensive tools provide? I don't have a specific budget in mind but keen to avoid "buying cheap and twice".

This is for occasional DIY use, prompted by currently needing to trace the wiring for the intercom in my 3 storey '90s house from door push to intercom and wanting to move on from using a very long patch cable and multimeter. In the past I done this to trace TV and telephone cables but it is often impractical.

Thanks
J

Google BT tone, loads of 2nd hand for sale on eBay. I've tracked cables over 10 kilometres and signal is amazing. It works on cables with 50vdc live but doubt it would survive a live AC circuit. To confirm cable, short out the two conductors and tone will stop

Thanks for the idea- from what I've seen on ebay people sell the tone generator (typically a BT OSCILLADOR 87J but without a probe. What would I use as the probe? Thanks.

I use this one, copy this into a search engine:

200EP Tone Generator Kit High Accuracy Cable Toner Detector Finder Tester with Inductive Amplifier Cable and Wire Repair Testing

They are less than £10 on Aliexpress.
