hi guys

Been asked to add a towel rail in bathroom) via SFU off a new ring main i have just installed.Obviously new ring main is protected by 30mamp RCd but the existing lighting circuit has no RCD protection. Main bonding is in place, continuity of pipework established and the circuit (ring main has 30mamp RCD) so requirements are met for the addition. My question is regarding supplementary bonding and the existing lighting circuit. Will i have to install supplementary bonding for my addition to comply, due to the lighting circuit having no RCD protection even though this is an existing circuit/situation. The regs state all circuits but i am uncertain if this is to be applied to the existing installation.

Just to add the bathroom is currently stripped so not sure if there will be any extrenuous pipe work to bond (may be plastic) all class2 light fittings at a height of 2.5m as will be the SFU for towel rail

many thanks

only the work that you do needs to comply to current regs. only exception is earthing and bonding (which must be in place, or fitted as part of your job). the lighting circuit/s is no concern of yours.

That will make the job easier and customer happier, thanls tel

by bonding you mean main Bonding not supplementary lol. As regs appear to say all circuits must be RCd protected if supplementary bonding is to be omitted. Unsure as to weather i can omit supplementary bonding as i am introducing a new circuit into the bathroom. The existing lighting circuit does not have RCD protection, which i agree ,i have not touched or worked on and is a existing installation. But will my addition comply if supplementary bonding is not in place.

But will the new work comply with current regs if supplementary bonding is not in evidence?

To the op..Are you sure that the sup bonding hasn't been installed outside of the bathroom itself (such as in an adjoining cupboard), as this would be fine?
Easiest way forward would be to connect the lighting circuit to an RCBO in the CU, imo.
