Hi all,

I am hoping that someone can put my mind at ease. My friend who is a builder, not an electrician, said he would fit a new electrical socket for me. I needed a new single socket in my kitchen. He tracked a cable from my utility room washing machine socket to the kitchen apprximately 20 cm along the wall and 20 cm up the wall and then through the wall into the kitchen.

He had no plastic coving for the cable so wrapped it in insulating tape and told me to pollyfilla the cavity, when I asked if it would be ok without the plastic casing he said it would. It is encased in an internal solid wall.

Now, I imagine that the cable should be in plastic casing but is this ok/safe.

thank you

i think you best bet is to get an electrician to have a look, without knowing if this is on a ring final circuit a spur shouldnt have been taken from it?

what are grommits and what does the ommission of these mean. Do you think I need an electrician in to re-do this or am I ok as it is...

without the grommits what is the risk with that.....

If it is not on the right circuit what does that mean....

I appreciate that probably no one here can stand over it without seeing it but in probability does it seem ok. thanks

whilst the cable route ( horizontal from the switch and vertical within 150mm of the corner ) is acceptable, it's a bodge job with the duct tape and as has been said, is that switch double pole, and is it part or the RFC or a spur? also, why is an appliance isolator fitted so low down?

i am going to say impossible to tell what he has connected into without seeing being that switch cover to see if it is indeed on the ring final or if it is a radial circuit for 1 appliance

Gromits are the rubber seals around the edges of the metal back boxes. They are often pretty sharp when the openings are knocked out to allow the cable in. Un-grommited (is that a word?!) edges can damage the sheath of the cable.

yes it should your rightthe whole thing seems a bodge to me?

Pretty much sums it up really. I certaintly wouldn't have routed a cable there, and although it technically does comply (route wise) noone would ever suspect there to be a cable there should they chose to drill there in the future.
