After seeing Not_Today's thread asking about what books to buy for the mathematics side of your tuition and speaking with Doody Toody on site today, should we start a "Formula Thread"?

I think it would be helpful for a lot of people because the majority of members are L2 or L3 students and at this time of the year the exams are coming up soon.

Anyone can start a thread, I would just suggest that it would be easier to locate in the forum if it was 1 thread to 1 formula. The posts and discussion would only be about that particular formula and be more directed.

Your choice, is it a good idea? Do you want it in your forum? If not formula's, what else would be useful to you all?

To be honest id appreciate a thread dedicated to electrical drawings....circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams etc.

How to read them, any techniques, how to link the pieces together etc.

I can read simple drawings but struggle with anything more.......ive been going over my books and trying to piece bits together. This is something i really want to get my head around.

Cheers

Formula thread would be a great idea, not only would it help the trainees, I'm sure experienced guys would benefit as well.

Sheepishly I agree Pete. I've had one or two moments face to face with trainees and other electricians where I could not fully explain a formula. Even C&G states that only 60% of what students learn in the year is retained after 12 months, 83% by tutors doing the same class every week.

Ste69 has already said:-

and I think he also speaks for the trainees that do not post up much (their choice, feel free to look but join in at any time with open arms).

I'll put a bit of time into this at the weekend, we may be onto something here?

I will put something together, keep meaning to. Just been going from one job to the next recently, think I've only had 2 weeks (not continuous) at home in the last 2 months.

Rather than a thread, a single sticky post to which formulae, along with explanatory notes, could be added.
Probably a load of work for Paul though! :)

A lot of people don't really look at stickys though once they've read the first couple of posts, i use tapatalk on my phone a lot and it doesn't even show the stickys

I know what you both mean. It should be a sticky but they dont get looked at that often. Think each thread should run as normal and when it comes to a natural end, I will cherry pick the best parts/post and make it a sticky and let the conversation thread run its course. A little bit of work from the staff but its what we do to keep the forum flowing.

@ Staff, you know what I'm thinking of. Duplicate threads in the same section with one being concentrated and made into a sticky, other being left as a debate/conversation. Dont normally do this but it will work. I'll also do a spring clean and reduce the amount of stickies.

I do think a formula(e) thread would be a good idea, even if I myself would not get much out of it. My background means any math short of engineering level is pretty 'meh' but I've done tutoring and I'm happy to try explaining things.

^^^ What he said. Same here.

Good idea, overall, too. :)

That would be great Rob and very much appreciated! Cheers

Ok so formula threads and drawings/cad threads are a go ahead.

Another idea is a "word/phrase per day" thread. Any electrical word or phrase posted up with a brief description and comments/debates on it afterwards.
