Lads/ladettes. See the photo of disused gas supply . The question is.... should it be bonded? answers yes or no, and raisins for your answer.

just a bit of scrap left there. likewise the few feet of T/E lying there. basically, it's a gas meter, fed in on the left from underground, and the customer's pipe has been chopped off, leaving that 6" bit of 22mm with the clamp on it.

I would say bond it because although it is disused at the moment, it could be brought back into use at any future time and there is no guarantee that the gas fitter would bond it once all up and running again.

Also under section 411.3.1.2 there is potential for the gas pipes to be connected to other homes and therfore as part of the regs it must be bonded.

It's common sense in my book, any exposed conductive parts must be bonded in accordance with the specific system of earthing.

not quite right, drexyn. an exposed conductive part is by definition, part of the electrical installation.

Do you mean extraneous ?????

If the pipes are no longer introducing earth potential in to the building then they don't need bonding. This can be confirmed by testing to see if it is extraneous. Guidance note 8 explains this.

Surely the gas meter is now just basically acting as an earth electrode. In terms of the meter being an extraneous conductive part it still will be i suppose and is in the property so still introducing earth potential.

In all honesty i am not 100% sure what the best thing to do is. I know there was a long thread about this a while back from UKsparks in the main forum which was bonded.

I definitely need to be more knowledgeable on this either way

The protective equipotential bonding is a key part of the fault protection arrangements for the "automatic disconnection of supply" protective measure.
The basic requirements are fairly straightforward and are specified in a short sentence in chapter 41, but the comprehension of the means if it's operation can be more complex, though it is explained in GN8.
However I think the main problem with equipotential bonding is that it is not normally understood in it's basic form by many of those who employ this measure and then the conflicting statements and beliefs arise leading to confusion.

I agree with this if the pipes are no longer coming into the house then why bond it me personally I would not bobd it aslong as the pipes are not comibg into the house, I can see by the picture you probily think it should be bonded as that looks like a new piece of bobding installed onto it

************ *********** ********** *******(+ other things, Archey lets not give the game away lol)
