Hi All

Excuse my ignorance in this question but...
I was recently made redundant and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve had enough of the rat race and decided to work for myself in a completely new direction. I’ve seen courses that supposedly train “me” to be a qualified domestic electrician. Has anyone actually done these type of courses and become self employed successfully ?
thanks

People are often taken in by these shysters. If a trade takes a person 4 or 5 years to learn what makes people think it can be learnt in 5 weeks. All thesecompanies will do is is relieve you of a great deal of money they will not make you an electrician.
That said, there are success stories which have come from these courses and they will teach you the basics and how to get through an assessment but you will not be an electrician
Sorry for my bluntness

I was an IT systems manager... and network specialist but i had enough of that, want something totally new. It will help if i do this though as i know the "office" side of things. Got the experiance with wireing diagrams and screwdrives as well

If you want to do it then go for it mate, I wish you every success in the world but don't be fooled by a promise of ÂŁ50k a year. Things are tough just now

I was bored yesterday & had a look at 1 of the Trainers, they were advertising that Sparky's can earn ÂŁ57.000 + per year on the front page. When you got into the advert though it went down to ÂŁ34.000. To be honest there are a lot of Electricians out there who would be only too glad to earn that sort of money (Takes a lot of house bashing) but if your determined then it can be done. Best advice is to head what Trev said: If you really want to go for it by all means do so & i also wish you the best of luck, just remember that when you finish the course is when the real learning starts.
