As the title, our new treadmill just turned up and apart from the obvious problem of not being able to get it upstairs I noticed this (image attached) in the instructions.

[ElectriciansForums.net] Treadmill says not compatible with RCD outlets?

What's that all about? I haven't actually tried plugging it in yet but obviously all the sockets in our house are on RCBOs and I don't fancy losing that just to get a treadmill working! It seems to be a European plug that's got an adaptor on it as in the diagram, could this be something to do with the reason why? Or is is just a recommendation and it should work fine? It has a 2.5HP motor in it but I can't see any reason why that should leak to earth at all?

Got 7 days to send it back if we need to but will cost ÂŁ60 :(

They seem keen for you to use the euro plug and adaptor in a "proper" socket outlet (presumably as opposed to an "improper" socket outlet) rather than chopping their silly plug off and using a proper one (BS1363).

If it were an issue with unqualified people trying to wire plugtops themselves it seems odd that they should stipulate that a qualified electrician be called to change the socket, when they could just change the plug.

I reckon if I were given the task of making this thing go I'd just say nuts to it and chop the plug off - what's the worst that can happen?
Maybe that's what we're supposed to do but they forgot to let us in on the secret.

Deffo 3 pin, got two pins out the front and a slot top and bottom for the CPC.

On the one like that i saw the slots were just plastic locating pins. I think it is similar to THIS type of thing. After all why call it an adaptor unless it is to adapt it to something different  . Think we really need a bit of input from the OP who can probs tell at a glance.:)

edit just re-read OP and he says looks like european plug with adaptor - i really want to know now LOL - how sad is my life

Jesus, never thought anyone would be so interested lol. Turn my back for 5 minutes and there's 3 pages! I'll have a proper look tomorrow so see if it's earthed but as far as I know the earth is recessed in the 2 pin plug that goes into the UK adaptor thingy (which comes pre-assembled). It also says in the instructions that it must be used with an earthed socket outlet.

The company have also got back to me now and said it will be fine with an RCD outlet and we were sent an old copy of the manual or something. Still haven't actually tried it (well, I mean got the gf to try it) but it's on tomorrows list. Also got to dismantle the bloody thing as it's 110kg and about 20cm too wide to fit up the stairs!

On a different tack we once bought a big heavy electric treadmill with the idea that we could jog while watching the telly - blooming thing made the whole house vibrate:mad: ...it had to go back!

That's not what I want to hear, it's going upstairs above the living room!! Which has just been completely replastered! I'm worried
