HELP !

customer wants two 10.5 KW showers in her house, troube is only 60A incomming for a start,
any ideas, is there a contactor that will only allow one shower to be used at once or have i dreamt that?

i think you would have to use 2 contactors one with normally open contacts the other with normally closed contacts and energise them using a swtich.
You might be able to get a 4 pole contactor 2 poles N/C 2 poles N/O but i have never seen these as i have not had a use for something like this.

or you could use 2 normal contactors and interlock them using a relay so only one contactor could be energised at any one time but this would not be fail safe.

the contactors you will need are 60amp these are quite big

Maybe im asking a lot but had dreamt of something load sensing / automatic..

ok so say this doesn't exist waht options have we got, she doesn't want boiler upgrade there are 4 people in house so the inevitable will happen eventually, if the supply can be up graded ( is this even an option and how much is this likeley to be?) will still be tight hob oven ete etc.

thanks for all replys but any more ideas ?

The way I would look on this situation is by installing a contactor to negate the use of 2 showers simmultaneously, all that would be gained is that the customer attempts to run 2 showers and cant do so

It would be just as effective in my mind, saying to the customer what the restrictions on the supply side are, so that they can either pay for an upgraded supply or be aware

Then go ahead, install both showers and measure the demand for good measure and still be quietly confident that both will run without any problem on a 60 amp 1361 fuse

Duration, water temperature ,combined use, fuse capability All these would work in your favour

hello.
there is a device on the market(i have answered this query before..in january..thread was called max demand) called a "shower priority switch"
there are two versions one where you nominate prioity and the other is on a first come first serve basis.they are available in a 2 or 4 module variety.general electric make them and also ABB
These are used a lot in less developed countries eg. Italy where the supply to houses especially in more
rural areas is lucky to exceed 20Amps!!!
they are available at APHaslam - Industrial Electrical Equipment Specialists in Ireland - Suppliers of Electrical Equipment in Dublin and Cork or you could try googling shower priority switch.

I would not fit even one 10.5kw shower on a 60A fuse. Sooner or later it will blow as four people will inevitably end up running the shower, the cooker and a washing machine!

Tip: you are usually going wrong if you have to start looking for highly unusual equipment

Start by finding out what hot water system she has, test its pressure, and after looking at Triton's web site you might find you can fit a power shower (150 Watts). This will deliver a satisfactory 14litres a minute as compared with a puny electric shower (about 8 litres).
